Diary of a wax nut – Day 3

Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance…Potentially! Pending the arrival of the new mixer my Alpha Theta DJM V5 I’m having a bit of a layout rethink. The only challenge is the fact that my current circumstances only afford my a very restricted setup space.

After flirting (again) with the digital side of DJing, the SC6000 Denon players have been boxed up and lofted! So my focus (as usual) goes back to vinyl. With this in mind I have pulled out the third of 5 Technics currently in my kit list. Why 3 turntables I hear you ask, do you really need 3? Well a simple answer would be no, I don’t need 3 however…

What does 3 turntables provide the DJ

From a very simple starting point it serves as a preview turntable. So when you have a track playing on deck 1 and a track already beat matched and lined up for the mix on deck 2, having a third deck allows you to preview more records that may either work better or for the next mix potentially.

However the reason I like a third deck is for when I do something a little different. I call it “theme mixing”. You may be familiar with skits in albums where there is a common theme running through between the tracks that glues the album together in a way. Often found on hip hop albums. My technique is to mix a few tracks with small portions feed into the mix either during the track or between tracks or even in the mix.

There will be lots more of this as I find appropriate and interesting material.

Cable management is high in my thoughts at the moment and adding a new mixer into the setup is always a good time to rewire everything from scratch.

Shame I’m away this week mostly so I think it’ll be a next weekend endeavour. That’s not to say it will be a quiet week on the music front for me as whilst working away I will be paying a visit to the Rhythm Academy studio for a mix and a chat. More details as I have them.

See you tomorrow good people.
