Let’s see how long I can keep a daily diary going. I thought it would be good practice for me and a useful resource for music addicts to realise they aren’t alone and it’s perfectly normal to behave in this obsessive way haha.
So, I am fortunate to have a rare day off work today. However the devil makes work for idol hands. My first thoughts today were to chase up Bax for the delivery of one of the most highly anticipated mixers for me in a long time, the mighty Alpha Theta DJM V5. Now I recently owned the V10 and although it’s the best cub install mixer on the market, I don’t own a club! I found it overkill for me and didn’t fall in love with it.
Now I have watched many videos and sourced as much information from people I respect in the industry to get a full understanding of this new iteration from the Alpha Theta/Pioneer DJ stable. I know we should be dropping the whole PionnerDJ naming now but its their fault because they called it a DJM!
Anyway back to my thought process with regards to purchasing said beast, so soon after thinking I had settled on the Xone 92 Mk2 Limited Edition as my mixer of choice ongoing (who was I trying to kid). It’s back to a precious point on another article I wrote where there simply isn’t the perfect catch-all mixer. The V5 isn’t just a watered down version of the V10 and while it shares all the good stuff like sound and build quality it brings a few tricks to the table and also carries the Alpha Theta branding for the first time in a standalone product.
We have the start of Sonic Link where the mixer has a wireless headphone built in transmitter (only for one set of headphones at the mo but they had top start somewhere), a new filter option and a new fader option which attenuates the highs in the mix. It’s done away with beat effects and the crossfader (neither of which I used anyway) so that works for me. I love the form factor and am busy thinking how I will be laying out my setup to accommodate this 3 channel unit.
I got a great deal from Bax saving £400 vs all the other suppliers but I do have to wait a week or so. I am impatient so this wait will be a test for me as irrational as that sounds.
Wax Merchants
In my morning Insta scroll on my WAXWRX channel I stumbled across an advert for Wax Merchant “the new way to dig”. I remembered downloading the app but not really taking a proper look. So I opened up the app and had a look around. Some nice bits on there and a couple of features of the app really stood out. First off browsing tunes is refreshingly good and a lot of online retailers do not invest enough into this. As you scroll tunes autoplay and very easy to scrub through and preview tunes fast! Next up are the quirky real world genre naming conventions. Great job guys at WM I will be spending more time on your app and look forward to placing an order to see how that process fares.
Today’s Soundtrack
So far I’m rocking my top 100 playlist on Tidal playing through my DJ setup with a great little bluetooth receiver which allows me to stream my phone through a channel on my mixer. There we go getting sidetracked again! The playlist covers all genres and all ages and contains what I think is teh best of the best. Example artists include: Erykah Badu, Randy Crawford, George Michael, Simply Red, Seal, Al Green, Dorothy Moore, Loose Ends, Fouk, Roots Manuva, Frankie Knuckles, Parov Stelar, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Janis Joplin, Floetry, Billy Cobham, Idris Muhammad, Kate Bush, Marillion, Ultravox, Mos Def, Adam F, Billy Joel and so many more, diverse eh!
