DJ mixers are bad for your health

I have such a love hate relationship with DJ mixers. I have a very addictive personality, which is why I have steered away from smoking, drugs and as much as possible alcohol. By nobody told me about the vice which is DJ equipment! This post is a request to the industry to put a warning sticker on the boxes “Buying this mixer can lead to addiction”.

Now I don’t know if there are some very clever people from the heads of all the companies that meet up in secret in some medieval castle somewhere to discuss ways of keeping us addicted to searching for the holy grail mixer (which doesn’t exist by the way). No one mixer out there ever seems to tick all the boxes, at least for me anyway. If the effects are perfect, then the phone pre-amps are dull or the EQing is peefect but the fader curves aren’t linear and so on.

I fell into this perpetual cycle of buying a mixer, getting frustrated or seeing the next shiney mixer, then selling said mixer. Then there were the moments where I didn’t feel I gave the mixer enough time to get used to and maybe it was the one for me….hmmm. So, I’d buy it second time and start the cycle all over again. My worst offenders are the A&H Xone 96 (on my fourth one), A&H Xone PX5 (fifth one) but the overall winner is the A&H Xone92 (6 mk1s and 1 mk2).

It truly is an addiction. I am aware I have a problem (which I believe is the first part of recovery) but there’s no 12 step program written for DJ kit addicts.

I mean is it so hard to make a mixer that changes from a rotary to a linear easily, has great 4 band eq which can be disabled if you wanted to drop out of the signal chain, a studio grade array of internal effects, send and return capability, high quality phone pre-amps on each of the four channels, a naturally warm sound without simply having some highs rolled off, accurate metering per channel, great quality touch points in a stunning-lloking enclosure. Oh, and an external power supply and a ten year warranty. Surely not too much to ask?
